Hyundai has recalled around 1.32 lakh units of its premium SUV Palisade globally after a tragic incident involving the death of a young child. The company has also paused sales of the model in several markets, prioritizing customer safety.
When Technology Fails
The incident has raised serious concerns about modern car safety systems. At the center of the issue is the SUV’s third-row “power folding seat” feature. Typically, such systems are equipped with anti-pinch sensors designed to stop movement if an obstruction—like a hand or body part—is detected.
However, in this case, the sensor reportedly failed to function properly. According to reports, a two-year-old child got trapped under the folding seat, and the system did not stop in time, leading to a fatal outcome. The issue has been specifically identified in the ‘Limited’ and ‘Calligraphy’ variants of the Palisade.
Massive Recall, Huge Cost
To fix the defect, Hyundai has initiated a large-scale recall across North America, Canada, and other regions. Industry estimates suggest the company could incur costs of nearly 100 billion won (over Rs.550 crore) for repairs and updates.
While financially manageable for Hyundai, the bigger challenge lies in restoring consumer trust and safeguarding its brand reputation after such a serious safety lapse.
Important Warning for Car Owners
Hyundai is currently working on software updates and mechanical fixes for the affected vehicles. Meanwhile, the company has advised customers to exercise caution.
Experts emphasize that this incident serves as a critical reminder: no matter how advanced automotive technology becomes, human vigilance is irreplaceable. Car owners, especially those with children, are advised not to rely entirely on automatic features and avoid leaving kids unattended near power-operated seats.
Expected Price in India
The Hyundai Palisade is expected to be priced between Rs.40 lakh and Rs.60 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. Positioned as a premium 7–8 seater SUV, it is likely to compete with models like the Toyota Fortuner.
