Hyderabad: Legendary Telugu actor Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away in the early hours of Sunday at his residence in Filmnagar, Hyderabad.

Rao, 83 was ailing for some time. His death marks the end of an era in Indian cinema, particularly in the Telugu film industry, where he left an indelible mark with his versatile performances spanning over four decades.

Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Krishna district, Kota Srinivasa Rao developed a keen interest in drama from a young age. Before stepping into films, he worked at the State Bank and was active in theatre. His cinematic journey began in 1978 with the film Pranam Kharidhu, under the direction of Kranti Kumar. He went on to appear in over 750 films, portraying a wide range of characters- from menacing villains to comic foils and compassionate elders.

Kota carved a unique niche in Telugu cinema, often redefining the villain's image with his distinctive style. His performances in films like Ahana Pellanta, Prathighatana, Yamudiki Mogudu, Kaidi No. 786, Shiva, Bobbuliraja, Yamaleela, Shanthosham, Bommarillu, Race Gurram, and Athadu earned him critical acclaim and audience admiration alike.

He also brought laughter and life to his roles, especially in combination with fellow comedian Babu Mohan- their iconic comic timing remains memorable to fans. With his deep voice, commanding presence, and impeccable acting, Kota was often regarded as a character actor who brought gravitas to every role he played.

Over his illustrious career, Kota Srinivasa Rao won nine Nandi Awards, the SIIMA Award for Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum (2012), and the Padma Shri in 2015 for his contributions to Indian cinema.

Outside the screen, Kota also ventured into public service. He served as MLA from Vijayawada East between 1999 and 2004.

He is survived by two daughters. His son, actor Kota Prasad, tragically died in a road accident in 2010.
