Superstar Rajinikanth is a name that commands respect not just in Indian cinema but across the globe. Known for his iconic style and powerful performances, the South megastar celebrates his birthday on December 12.
Rajinikanth’s name alone guarantees a box-office hit. His fan following is so massive that when his films release, fans queue up outside theatres as early as 5 a.m., forcing theatre owners to begin shows early. His devoted fans worship him like a deity — cheering, tossing coins at the screen, and celebrating with unmatched enthusiasm. In fact, the practice became so overwhelming that theatres had to ban coins after screens were damaged.
Remarkably, Rajinikanth continues to play lead roles even at the age of 75. His popularity is so immense that filmmakers fear showing his death on-screen, worried it might upset fans and cause the film to flop. As a result, Rajinikanth hasn’t performed an on-screen death scene in many years.
The superstar has acted in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, and English films, but never in Marathi cinema — despite originally being Marathi. Widely known as ‘Thalaiva,’ his real name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad.
Rajinikanth has been honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema. While receiving the award, he fondly recalled his struggle years and thanked his fans, family, and everyone who supported him throughout his journey.
