Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has extended his support to veteran actor Rajpal Yadav after a remark about the latter’s financial troubles during an awards show triggered widespread debate online.
The incident took place at the Chetak Screen Awards on Sunday, where host Saurabh Dwivedi made a comment referencing Yadav’s cheque bounce case involving Rs 9 crore. The moment, which quickly went viral on social media, drew mixed reactions from viewers.
Coming out in Yadav’s defence, Salman Khan praised the actor’s long-standing contribution to the film industry. He noted that Yadav has been working for nearly three decades and continues to be valued by filmmakers for his craft. Khan also encouraged him to keep focusing on his work, emphasizing that opportunities would continue to come his way.
The superstar wrote:
“Kaam toh aapko bohot milega aur issi dollar rate pe milega aur milte rahega. Hakikat yeh hai (Work will keep coming your way, and at the dollar rate only. And that’s the reality)”.
“Aur yeh yaad rakhna ke kabhi kabhi flow mai kuch nikal aata hai, dena hi hai toh dimag mai rakho dil se kaam karo, dollar upar ho ya neeche kya farak padta hai dena toh India mai hi hai @rajpalofficial (Remember, sometimes things are said in the flow. You do have to give (back) (don’t reply), keep it in mind and work from the heart. Whether the dollar goes up or down, how does it matter, the payment is happening in India only)”.
Yadav, who has shared screen space with Khan in films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Partner, had earlier faced legal trouble after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea for more time in a loan-related cheque bounce case linked to his 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata. The loan amount, initially Rs 5 crore, had escalated to Rs 9 crore. He spent nearly 13 days in Tihar Jail before being granted interim bail.
During the awards show, co-hosted by Dwivedi and comedian Zakir Khan, Yadav was discussing the global oil crisis amid geopolitical tensions when Dwivedi made a light-hearted remark about repayment of debts regardless of currency fluctuations.
Despite the comment, Yadav handled the situation with composure, responding calmly on stage. His reaction was widely appreciated on social media, even as Dwivedi faced criticism for the joke.
However, Yadav later defended Dwivedi, urging people not to target him. In a video message, the actor described both Dwivedi and Zakir Khan as close to him and requested fans to refrain from spreading negativity. He emphasized the bond between artists, journalists, and storytellers, adding that any criticism directed at Dwivedi would hurt him personally.
