Mumbai: Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut on Monday assured a Bombay High Court bench she will appear before city police for recording her statement in connection with her Instagram post over protesting farmers, leading to relief from her arrest till January next year.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Ranaut seeking court nod that the First Information Report registered against her by the Mumbai Police for her comments against the Sikh community be quashed.

During the hearing, police stated before the court they will not arrest her till the next date of hearing on January 25. She promised to record her statement with the Khar police.

In a letter addressed to Mumbai’s additional commissioner of police and the Delhi Police Cyber Cell, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee had filed a complaint against the actor.

Based on the complaint, the FIR was filed against Ranaut, who made a number of controversial comments and made unsubstantiated allegations.

The Mumbai Police lodged the FIR against the actor for her social media post in which she called those earlier protesting the contentious farm laws “Khalistani terrorists”.

Ranaut was charged under Section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to incite religious feelings).

Ranaut on Instagram said: “Khalistani terrorists were arm twisting the government.” Her remarks came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 19, announced that the three farm laws would be repealed during the Parliament’s Winter Session.

Ranaut also praised former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in her post, saying she “crushed Khalistanis like mosquitoes".

She has on various occasion made similar controversial statements. Last month she stated that India gained independence in 2014 and that all the country received in 1947 was charity. She has also sparred with lyricist Javed Akhtar, who has also filed a defamation suit against her for her comments about him. (UNI)
