Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Tuesday issued summons to podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia and YouTuber Samay Raina for an inquiry over Allahbadia’s controversial joke at the ‘India’s Got Latent’ show hosted by Raina, a senior officer from the Mumbai police said.

The Assam Police yesterday registered an FIR against five people, including Allahbadia and Raina, in connection with a “joke” that many have criticised as being obscene. The Mumbai Police said it was conducting an inquiry into the issue but has not filed an FIR.

The Mumbai Police has asked for cooperation from the two and sought a reply on the matter, official added.

Allahbadia, known for his channel BeerBiceps, made the remarks during a recent episode where he was a guest alongside other popular content creators Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh and Apoorva Makhija.

Earlier Allahbadia has issued an apology following his controversial remark sparked widespread criticism with calls for his podcast to be banned.

Politicians, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Opposition leaders in the state condemned him for "misusing" freedom of speech.

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for honouring Allahbadia, who boasts over 6 lakh followers on X, 4.5 million on Instagram, and more than 1 crore subscribers on YouTube, with a “National Creators Award” presented to him before the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
