Pall of gloom descends on film industry following Soumitra Chatterjee's passing away

Kolkata: A Pall of gloom descended on the film industry as it lost one of its stalwarts - the doyen of Bengali films, Soumitra Chatterjee  who passed away following prolonged illness at the city hospital here this afternoon.Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee said, "Your contribution to the Indian Cinema will always be remembered."


"Tragic loss!! Rest in peace Sir!! Your contribution to the Indian Cinema will always be remembered and inspire the generations to come !!" he tweeted.American Indian actor Rachel White in a tweet said, "Bidding Farewell with a heavy heart to the legendary #SoumitraChatterjee. Prayers and warmth going out to his family and fans world over."
 
Actress Richa Chadha posted an image of Soumitra with Satyajit Ray and captioned it, "RIP Soumitra Chatterjee! You live on through your work for eternity! Thank you for the movies. A big, big loss to the world of cinema and art. An era has indeed ended with no one in sight to fill the void.

Bengali actor Jeet in a tweet said, "Demise of the legend, the King Of Bangla cinema Soumitra Chatterjee. It's the end of an Era. He will always remain in our hearts through his immense body of work. Had a fantastic bonding with him. Will miss you!!! #Restinpeacelegend."
 
Bengal actress Swastika Mukherjee tweeted, "This year will take it all. Parents, legends, childhood, nostalgia. All of it. Merciless year."Actress Payel Ghosh wrote on Twitter, "End of an iconic era. Bengali film industry lost one of its greatest living legends today. May his soul rest in peace. RIP #SoumitraChatterjee."
 
Actor Rahul Bose tweeted, "I grew up watching his films day after day. So working with him in #15ParkAvenue was surreal. He answered all my questions on how it was to work with #SatyajitRay with generosity and warmth. It's been a privilege, Soumitra da. Rest in peace."

Filmmaker Prosit Roy pays tribute to Soumitra Chatterjee with his image.Music composer Jeet Ganguly wrote on tweeter, "I have no words to express my grief ....! A great loss for Indian and International film industry...Rest in peace Soumitra Chatterji."
 
Lyricist Varun Grove tweeted, "Science can explain how we evolved from just another hunter-gatherer species to creators of abstract art in a span of 50k years and still, nothing can explain the sublime magic some artists manage to ignite in just 50 years."

Director Onir expressed his pain saying, "End of an Era for  Bengali Cinema. There are too many performances of these amazing artists that have enriched our lives for decades to mention a few. World Cinema will celebrate this beautiful man & his art for eternity. Rest in peace. You r Loved and Cherished."
 
Chatterjee was known for his collaboration with Oscar-winner Satyajit Ray and the Feluda series.The thespian immortalised the titular role of Feluda in Satyajit Ray's films.
 
Chatterjee was also a part of several other works of Satyajit Ray including Apu'r Sangshar or The World Of Apu.
 
Some of Chatterjee's best works include Ashani Sanket, Ghare Baire, Aranyer Din Ratri, Charulata, Shakha Proshakha, Jhinder Bandi, Saat Pake Bandha, and more.(UNI)
