Mumbai: Hanuman Beniwal of Rashtriya Loktantrik Party and S Saraswati of the BJP on Tuesday raised in the Lok Sabha the issue of distorted portrayal of Bharatpur king Maharaja Surajmal in movie 'Panipat'.
Speaking during Zero Hour, Mr Beniwal said feelings of people have been hurt. He requested Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar and CBFC to look into the matter to avoid protests and law and order problem.
He demanded that cuts be made where Maharaja Surajmal has been depicted in poor light in the movie as has been done previously by the Censor Board in 15 movies.
Mr Saraswat said it is unfortunate that the legendary Jat ruler, Maharajah Surajmal has been depicted in an unseemly light and historical facts have been distorted in the film, "Panipat".
He said Maharaja Surajmal never lost a battle and places like Aligarh, Agra and Mathura were ruled by him, adding that protests were taking place all over the country.
The movie, featuring Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, is based on the third battle of Panipat and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, found itself caught in controversy after its release. The movie allegedly shows Bharatpur king Maharaja Surajmal as a greedy emperor, who wanted to conquer the Red Fort of Agra and denied help to Maratha army during the Panipat battle.
Alleging that facts have been distorted in the film, Jats have threatened to intensify their protests if the film was not edited. (UNI)
