The 71st National Film Awards have been announced, with Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan and acclaimed actor Vikrant Massey jointly receiving the Best Actor honour. Khan was recognised for his dynamic performance in Jawan, while Massey earned the award for his compelling portrayal in 12th Fail. This marks a milestone for Shah Rukh Khan, who receives his first-ever National Award in a film career spanning 33 years. The actor expressed gratitude and joy in an emotional message shared on social media.
In a video posted on Instagram, Shah Rukh said,“I need not say that I am filled with gratitude, pride and humility at this moment. Being honoured with the National Award is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. Heartfelt thanks to the jury, chairman, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and everyone who considered me worthy of this honour.”
He further acknowledged his collaborators from 2023, saying,“Thank you Raju Sir (Rajkumar Hirani), Sid (Siddharth Anand), and especially Atlee Sir and his entire team for giving me the opportunity to work in Jawan. For believing in me, that I could live up to this role and deserve this award. Atlee Sir, as you always say — ‘Mass…’”
He concluded with,“Thank you for honouring me with the National Award. Thanks to the jury and the Ministry of I&B. Iss samman ke liye Bharat Sarkar ka dhanyawaad. Overwhelmed with the love showered upon me.”
Jawan, released in September 2023 and directed by Atlee, is a high-octane action thriller with a strong social message. The film was a massive box-office success. Shah Rukh plays dual roles—Azad, a jailer who moonlights as a vigilante, and Vikram Rathore, his older, battle-hardened father.
Meanwhile, 12th Fail was named Best Feature Film at the awards. Directed by veteran filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the movie is based on the real-life journey of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame extreme poverty and hardship to join the Indian Police Service.
Vikrant Massey’s heartfelt portrayal of Sharma drew widespread praise and has now earned him his first National Award.
This is a landmark moment for both actors: Shah Rukh Khan ends a 33-year wait for a National Award, and Vikrant Massey cements his reputation as one of the most talented performers of his generation.(UNI)
