New Delhi: 'Son of Sardaar 2', the much-promised sequel to the 2012 blockbuster, finally released on Friday, under the direction of Vijay Kumar Arora.
The movie features Ajay Devgn in a repeat performance as Jassi Singh Randhawa, supported by Mrunal Thakur in Rabia, alongside a stellar cast including Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal, Kubbra Sait, Chunky Panday, Neeru Bajwa, and late Mukul Dev in his last outing.
The action follows Jassi to Scotland to reunite with his estranged wife, Dimple (Neeru Bajwa), but ensnares him in the funny mess of a Pakistani dance company headed by Rabia. There are layers of cultural misadventures, familial backstabs, and treasure-hunts-like the Mango Festival pursuit underlying the action and comedy.
Critically, the movie gave mixed reviews. Ajay Devgn's comic timing is universally acclaimed, Deepak Dobriyal's is remarkable for depth and humor, and the Punjabi-family environment exudes nostalgia. However, reviewers mentioned an inconsistent plot and predictability in plot development. Filmibeat gives it 3.5/5 and calls it a "paisa-vasool entertainer."
Although 'Son of Sardaar 2' will likely entertain supporters of Punjabi mayhem and retrograde humour, it relies too heavily on formula and has little newness to it, particularly in a crowded box-office window.
