Putting an end to weeks of speculation, the makers of the much-anticipated Tamil film ‘Thalaivar 173’ have officially announced that the project will be directed by Cibi Chakravarthy.
The film stars Superstar Rajinikanth and is being produced by legendary actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI). The announcement was made on Saturday by RKFI along with the release of the first-look poster featuring Rajinikanth.
Initially unveiled as a landmark collaboration bringing together two of Indian cinema’s biggest icons—Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan—‘Thalaivar 173’ is being positioned as one of the marquee Tamil releases planned for the Pongal festival in 2027.
The project had faced uncertainty late last year after noted director Sundar C, who was originally attached to helm the film, announced his exit citing “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.” His decision sparked widespread discussion among industry observers and fans.
Subsequently, Kamal Haasan clarified that the earlier storyline did not align with Rajinikanth’s expectations, leading to the idea being dropped. He had then expressed confidence that a new script would be developed to fully satisfy the Superstar.
That assurance has now been fulfilled, with RKFI formally confirming that ‘Thalaivar 173’ will be produced under its banner and directed by Cibi Chakravarthy, marking a fresh creative beginning for the high-profile project.
