New Delhi: Here's a list of Hollywood movies set to release this year. Across genres viewers are heading for a treat be it followers of the MCU, DCEU, or Tom Cruise fans, even followers of Eywa will flock to theatres, if Omicron and Florona allows.
Not just superheroes, experimental, drama, action, comedy, romance, but 2022 will keep viewers entertained even with sheer number of sequels.
Some of these are long delayed projects, whose teasers, trailers and posters came out in 2021 when expecting Covid to be done and dusted, the filmmakers announced them.
Now when they finally release we have no way of really knowing what to expect. Whether they will woo you or go bust at the Box Office.
1. "The Batman" directed by Matt Reeves, is a reboot of the franchise and shall feature a younger vigilante this time in his second year of crime fighting. Pitted against The Riddler played by Paul Dano, Robert Pattinson will be seen for the first time as the Caped Crusader.
Announced in 2020 the film was set to release in 2021, now with a delayed release, the cast also including Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as Lieutenant James Gordon of GCPD, John Tuturo as Carmine Falcone, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot “The Penguin”. The movie is scheduled to be released on March 4.
2. "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" will be a continuation from "Spider Man: No Way Home" and the first season of "Loki". This time Doctor Strange will open up a path into the multiverse and summon an alternate Doctor Strange, with an evil strain.
His once ally and friend, Mordo, will also go against the wizard. Aided by Wong and Scarlet Witch, Benedict Cumberbatch's double role is also highly anticipated after it was announced in 2019. Directed by Sam Raimi, after Scott Derrickson stepped down, the movie is set to release on May 6.
Cumberbatch will be seen alongside Benedict Wong as Wong, Elizabeth Olson as Wanda Maximoff/ Scarlett Witch, Chiwetel Ejifor as Karl Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer and Xochiti Gomez as America Chavez.
3. "The Northman" is a historical epic set at the turn of the 10th century in Iceland. Directed and Co-written by Robert Eggers and Sjon, it's a revenge thriller based on the story of a Viking prince who is out to avenge the death of his father at the hands of his uncle.
Starring Alexander Skarsgard as Amleth, Nicole Kidman as Queen Gudurun, Claes Bang as Fjolnier, Anna Taylor Joy as Olga, Ethan Hawke as Aurvandill, Bjork as the Seeress, Wiliam Dafoe as Helmir The Fool, and Ingvart Eggert Stigursson as Sorcerrer and mostly filmed in Ireland, the GOT and Viking fans will see it in theatres on April 22.
4. "Fantastic Beasts : The Secrets of Dumbledore" is the 11th installment in the Harry Potter franchise and the third in the Fantastic Beasts.
It is set in the 1930s, several years after The Crimes Of Grindelwald. It will focus on the story of Albus Dumbledore the eventual headmaster of Hogwarts in the Potter series tasking Newt Scamander and his allies with a mission bringing them into conflict with dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald and his army.
It shall focus on the wizarding world’s role in WWII and the magic communities in China, Bhutan and Germany. Directed by David Yates, it stars Eddie Redmayne as Scamander, Jude Law as Dumbledore, Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone/Aurelius Dumbledore, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Madds Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald (replacing Johny Depp). The movie is set to release on April 8 in the UK and April 15 in the US.
5. "Spider Man : Across The Spider Verse Part I" is the first part of the sequel to the 2018 Spider Man: Into The Multiverse, the movie shall focus on Miles Morales’s adventure into the a shared group of multiverses called collectively as the Spiderverse while facing a new enemy.
Featuring a couple of new Spider Men and women as well as some old ones, the animated computer film is directed by the new trio of directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K.Thompson.
Starring Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfied as Gwen Stacy, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara and Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, the film will be released on October 7, delayed by Covid. Part Two is expected to be released in 2023 and a female spin off is also in the making.
6. "The Flash" Set in the DCEU universe, this is the 12th film in the universe. Directed by Andy Muschietti, the film will be inspired by The Flashpoint comic book with Barry Allen traveling back in time to prevent the murder of his mother, leading to unintended consequences.
Set to be released in the US on November 9, the film stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/ The Flash, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/ Batman, Michael Keaton as Batman from an alternate universe, Michael Shannon as General Zodd, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul, Sasha Calle as Supergirl and Maribel Verdu as Nora Allen.
7. "Avatar 2" Set years after the 2009 James Cameron classic, his "Avatar 2" is the sequel to the original. Jake Sully who is now one of the Omaticaya, has a family and in his quest to protect that family and his clan, Sully sets out.
Put off by various tech limitations for over a decade, Cameron will return with the sequel to his biggest commercial success after over 13 years. The film is scheduled for release on December 16, and will star Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri and Kate Winslet as Ronal in the Na’avi cast.
The human cast will include Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge, Dileep Rao as Dr. Max Patel, and Vin Diesel and CJ Jones in yet undisclosed roles.
8. "Top Gun: The Maverick" set 30 years after the 1986 classic "Top Gun", is the sequel to the story of Navy pilot Pete Mitchell as he faces new challenges encounters and uncertainty in his life. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who picks up the reigns from Tony Scott, the film will be available for streaming 45 days after its theatrical release.
Starring original cast Tom Cruise as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Tim Kelly as Val Kilmer as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, the others who will feature are Ed Harris as Rear Admiral, Jonn Hamm, besides Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, who will be the Caps new love interest.
9. "Morbius" which will now release on April 1, after two delays, is about biochemist Dr. Michael Morbius who after attempting to cure himself from a rare blood disease ends up becoming a vampire in the Sony Spider Man Universe.
It stars Jared Leto as Michael Mobius, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft and Michael Keaton as The Vulture from Spider Man: Homecoming. Initially scheduled for release on January 28, after the Covid delay of July.
10. "Scream 5" Set 25 years after the "Scream", this is a direct sequel to Scream original and it revolves around another person who donned the mask of Ghostface and has now again gone on killing spree in the quiet town of Woodsboro, terrifying its inhabitants leaving behind a trail of bodies.
This is the first Scream not to be directed by Wes Craven who died in 2015 and is instead directed by the duo of Matt Bettinelli Olpi and Tyler Gillett.
The film stars original cast of David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Roger L. Jackson, Neve Campbell and Mary Shelton with newcomers Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jena Ortega and Jack Quaid. The film is scheduled to be released on January 13. (UNI)
