New Delhi: Renowned poet and lyricist Javed Akhtar today launched a sarcastic attack on the All India Muslim Personal Law Board stand that triple talaq was valid but it should not be misused, saying 'tomorrow we may hear of misuse of molestation, misuse of c, misuse of wife beating.' The AIMPLB at their two-day national executive meeting in Lucknow which concluded yesterday had said that divorcing wife by pronouncing 'talaq' thrice in one go was wrong but was still valid in Islamic sharia, and the only thing needed was to check its misuse.

Subjecting these people to social boycott would serve as a deterrence, the Board said. Reacting to this, Akhtar tweeted, 'AIMPLB call for boycotting abusers of triple talaq is a hoax. Triple talaq is itself an abuse n should be banned. They are trying to stall it.' AIMPLB president Rabey Hasan Nadwai said, 'If some people misuse it, the need is not to change the law, but to make people mend their ways.' A number of petitions against triple talaq are pending before the Supreme Court, where the AIMPLB is strongly opposing these pleas for scrapping the practice.

The Board has been maintaining that the Government should not interfere in the matter as it involved the personal laws of Muslims. The Centre had recently filed an affidavit in the apex court urging it to declare the practice of triple talaq, nikah halal and polygamy inconsistent with Muslim women’s fundamental right to life and dignity.
