Kyiv/Los Angeles: In the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, Netflix's Ukrainian political comedy satire “Servant of the People”, starring President Volodymyr Zelensky from his pre political days, is back on popular demand.
Several European nations have asked for the broadcasting rights of the show that is a commentary on the actual political events of Ukraine.
The show ran from 2015 to 2019 and starred Zelensky as Vasyl Patrovych Golobordko, a high school teacher who gains popularity overnight after his rant against the high corruption in Ukraine goes viral.
Eventually he earns the President's post which is almost a reflection of actual events that followed in real life. The show ended production when Zelensky decided to run for president of Ukraine in 2019 as a member of the Servant of the People political party, winning by a landslide.
Zelensky won upon the promises of building a new Ukraine, telling his supporters “I will never fail you.”
The show was cancelled in 2021 as Zelensky assumed office. However recently due to the war, Zelensky has become an increasingly popular figure in the international community over half of which has openly sided with him and furthermore, there has been a rising demand to see the show in the US.
The Ukranian President has become a social media celebrity since February 24, not just in the US due to his constant updates with pictures and videos of Ukranian forces giving stiff resistance to Russian forces, but also across the world.
Netflix has announced that it will bring the show back, though it will be available only to the US subscriber base.
According to its recent statement on Twitter, Netflix tweeted, “Netflix has once again decided to air the series in the US." According to its official statement: "You asked and it's back! Servant of the People is once again available on Netflix in The US. The 2015 satirical comedy series stars Volodymyr Zelensky playing a teacher who unexpectedly becomes President after a video of him complaining about corruption suddenly goes viral.”
The creator and producer of the show, Zelensky was a former actor and comedian prior to his candidacy.
The show gained massive popularity in the country and ran for three seasons.
Among his roles, Zelensky provided the voice of “Paddington Bear” in Ukrainian versions of the film series and won a Ukrainian “Dancing With the Stars”. (UNI)
