Prime Video has announced the release date of its upcoming series Matka King, starring Vijay Varma. The much-anticipated show is set to premiere on April 17.
Directed by Nagraj Manjule, known for acclaimed films like Fandry, Sairat, and Jhund, the series is created and written by Abhay Koranne. It features a strong ensemble cast including Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat, and Gulshan Grover.
Matka King follows the journey of Brij Bhatti, a sharp and ambitious cotton trader played by Vijay Varma, as he navigates the rapidly evolving socio-economic landscape of 1960s Bombay in his quest for legitimacy and respect.
Set against the backdrop of bustling markets, crowded chawls, and shifting power structures, the story begins with a bold idea that gradually spirals into something much larger, impacting people across social classes. As ambition intensifies and stakes rise, the narrative unfolds into a gripping tale of power, aspiration, and identity.
Calling it a compelling and layered story, Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals at Prime Video India, said the series captures one man’s rise against all odds in a changing world. He described Brij Bhatti’s transformation into the “Matka King” as both fascinating and cautionary.
The show is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur along with Nagraj Manjule, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashwini Sidwani, and Ashish Aryan under the banners of Roy Kapur Films, Aatpat, and SMR Productions.
Siddharth Roy Kapur said the project stood out due to its unique setting and the powerful story of ambition, identity, and the pursuit of respect in a transforming society. He also praised Manjule’s creative vision and Koranne’s storytelling, highlighting the depth brought in by the talented cast.
The series also features actors Vineet Kumar Singh, Bharat Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Jamie Lever, Kishor Kadam, Cyrus Sahukar, Arpita Sethia, Sambhaji Tangade, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjivv Jotangia, and Simran Ashwini in key roles.
Matka King will stream globally from April 17, exclusively on Prime Video.
