Kozhikode: In yet another medical catastrophe related to the second wave of the dreaded Coronavirus, doctors at a private hospital in nearby Calicut were forced to remove an eye of a 62-year-old man, who had recovered from COVID-19, but later infected with black fungus.

The ill-fated patient, V P Abdul Khader of Tirur, had a tough time earlier as he was infected with pneumonia while he was undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at the Manjeri government Medical college hospital last month.

But he had severe headache and pain on face while he was taking rest at his home post recovering fully from Covid.

Junaid, son of Abdul Khader, said a preliminary investigation in a local clinic confirmed black fungus (mucormycosis) and was shifted to a private hospital in nearby Calicut on April 7.

The doctors there had removed his left eye following their diagnosis that the infection is likely to spread to his brain, sources said.

The patient, who is diabetic for long, is recovering at hospital, sources added.

Black Fungus was reported from Kollam district also. (UNI)
