Ahmedabad/Jamnagar: The first case of Omicron variant of Coronavirus was detected in Gujarat on Saturday after a 72-year old man, who had returned to Jamnagar from Zimbabwe, tested positive for the new variant.
State health department officials said that the swab samples of the NRI, who had landed in Jamnagar on November 28, has been found infected with Omicron variant.
This takes the total confirmed Omicron cases in India to three after two cases were reported in Bengaluru last week.
He has been kept in isolation ward of Jamnagar Dental College.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the situation after first case of Omicron was confirmed in the state.
State government is maintaining strict vigil on those arriving from Africa and other countries affected by the new variant of Covid-19.
Centre has advised states and union territories to maintain extra vigil to prevent the spread the new variant of coronavirus. (UNI)
