New Delhi:India has hit the record number of COVID-19 vaccination jabs in one day with over 86 lakh shots administered to the populace on Tuesday.Earlier, the country had achieved a single-day record of 45 lakh doses being given on April 5.
"Nearly 86 lakh (86,16,373) doses have been administered on the first day of the new phase of COVID-19 Vaccination," the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness over the rising figures of vaccination and said that the vaccine remains our strongest weapon to fight the "millennium scourge".
"Today’s record-breaking vaccination numbers are gladdening. The vaccine remains our strongest weapon to fight COVID-19. Congratulations to those who got vaccinated and kudos to all the front-line warriors working hard to ensure so many citizens got the vaccine. Well done India!," the Prime Minister tweeted.
Mr Modi, in a major policy shift on June 7, had announced to provide free vaccination to people of 18-44 years of age.
At that time, he gave a clarion call to all citizens to vaccinate themselves and encourage others who are eligible to take the COVID-19 vaccine.
Notably, during May, more than 7.9 cr vaccines were available for the nationwide COVID19 vaccination exercise. These were ramped up to 11.78 cr in June.
Today Madhya Pradesh administered the maximum 15,42,632 doses followed by Karnataka 10,67,734, Uttar Pradesh 6,74,546, Gujarat 5,02,173, Haryana 4,72,659 and so on.
Over 2.14 cr Covid vaccine doses still available with states: Health Ministry
More than 2.14 crore (2,14,90,297) Covid-19 vaccine doses are still available with the states and Union Territories, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Tuesday.
As many as 33,80,590 more will be received by them within the next three days, it added.
So far, the Centre has provided 29.35 crore (29,35,04,820) doses to the states. Of this, the total consumption, including wastages is 27,20,14,523 doses, as per data available this morning.
''As part of the nationwide vaccination drive, the Government of India has been supporting the States and UTs by providing them COVID Vaccines free of cost. In addition, the Govt. of India has also been facilitating direct procurement of vaccines by the States/UTs. Vaccination is an integral pillar of the comprehensive strategy of the Government of India for containment and management of the pandemic, along with Test, Track, Treat and COVID-appropriate behaviour,'' the Ministry said.
Meanwhile, India recorded 42,640 new cases of COVID-19 during the past 24 hours, pushing the caseload to 2,99,77,861, while the death toll soared to 3,89,302 with 1,167 more fatalities, according to the Ministry's data.
The country has administered 86,16,373 vaccine doses in the past day, highest ever single day vaccination achieved in the world so far, raising the total vaccination count to 28,87,66,201(UNI)
