Iran launches overnight wave of missiles, drones at Gulf states; hits US embassy in Riyadh, Trump vows response

Iran attacks US embassy in Riyadh
The attack on the US embassy in Riyadh were part of a wave of missiles and drones launched at Gulf states on Monday night to Tuesday. 
 
Just after midnight local time, Israel's military said it was working to intercept a large wave of missiles launched from Iran targeting multiple locations, including Jerusalem.
 
The defense ministry of the United Arab Emirates said it was dealing with a barrage of ballistic missiles coming from Iran, while Qatar's defence ministry said it intercepted two ballistic missiles early Tuesday morning. 
 
Fresh explosions were heard later in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Tuesday morning, news agencies report. 
 
Saudi Arabia's defense ministry posted just after 6 a.m. local time (3:00 GMT) on Tuesday that it had "intercepted and destroyed" eight near Riyadh and the city of Al-Kharj, some 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of the capital. 
 
According to a statement issued by Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, Iran also targeted Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain overnight.
 
US embassy in Saudi Arabia hit by drones
 
Saudi Arabia has said that the US embassy in the capital, Riyadh, has been hit by two drones.
 
The attack resulted in a limited fire and some material damage, Saudi Arabia's Defense ‌Ministry ?said in ?a post in Arabic on X early on Tuesday morning.
 
News agencies cited witnesses as describing a loud blast and light smoke coming from the embassy. 
 
The embassy issued a "shelter in place" ‌notice early on Tuesday for US citizens in Riyadh, as well as for the port city of Jeddah in the west and the eastern city of Dhahran. 
 
It recommended that American citizens "avoid the ?Embassy until further notice due to the attack on the facility."
 
The US Embassy compound in Kuwait was reportedly struck on Monday with reports of black smoke rising above the compound. That embassy is also closed, with the Department of State warning "Do not come to the Embassy."
 
Trump suggests US could retaliate 'soon' over strike on embassy
President Donald Trump has suggested that the United States would retaliate "soon" for the attack on its embassy in Riyadh and for the killing of six US military personnel in Iranian strikes.
 
Speaking to the US cable network NewsNation on Monday, Trump reportedly said "you'll find out soon" how the US would respond, without providing further detail. 
 
He added that he didn't "think boots on the ground [in Iran] will be necessary," according to NewsNation White House correspondent.
 
US Central Command on Monday afternoon that six service members had been killed.
