With local body elections approaching in Gujarat, political activity has intensified, especially in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing for major internal changes as part of its “Mission Clean” strategy.
According to party sources, key meetings scheduled for April 8 and 9 will finalize ticket distribution. Due to new reservation rotations, caste equations, and revised guidelines from the parliamentary board, nearly 140 sitting corporators may be denied tickets.
Strict Criteria: Age Limit and ‘No Repeat’ Policy
The BJP has set strict benchmarks for candidate selection this time. Leaders above 60 years of age and those who have already served three consecutive terms as corporators are unlikely to be given another chance. Additionally, corporators with controversial reputations or links to any form of misconduct are expected to be dropped.
The party’s focus is to field fresh faces with a clean image in the upcoming elections.
Complete Panel Change in 12 Wards
Out of Ahmedabad’s 48 wards, around 12 wards may see a complete overhaul, with all four candidates being replaced. Key areas likely to witness full panel changes include Ghatlodia, Nava Vadaj, Shahpur, Jamalpur, and Maktampura.
These wards are considered politically sensitive due to opposition influence and shifting caste dynamics. The BJP is expected to adopt a new strategy in these constituencies. In the remaining wards, only one or two candidates may be repeated.
Inactive and Controversial Leaders Under Scanner
The party is also taking a tough stand against corporators who remained inactive during their tenure or were more focused on foreign visits than local development. Cases like that of former corporator Chetan Parmar from Khokhra ward have reportedly come under scrutiny for lack of engagement.
Such leaders are likely to be replaced by grassroots workers who have been actively involved with the public and local issues.
Active Performers May Get Another Chance
While many tickets may be cut, active office-bearers who have performed well in various committees could be given another opportunity. Leaders associated with the Revenue Committee, Legal Committee, and Housing and Recreation Committee—such as Jainik Vakil, Pradeep Dave, and Prakash Gurjar—have reportedly been appreciated for their work.
Their performance-driven approach may help them secure tickets again despite the broader reshuffle.
