New Delhi:The government has banned private manufacturers from manufacturing Oxytocin formulations for domestic use, with effect from July 1.Oxytocin is a hormone that acts on organs in the body (including the breast and uterus) and as a chemical messenger in the brain, controlling key aspects of the reproductive system, including childbirth and lactation, and aspects of human behaviour.
The drug will however be manufactured by Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd (KAPL) which is a public sector company, for domestic use from that date, a Health Ministry statement said here on Wednesday.
The government has also banned the import of Oxytocin and its formulations.KALP will supply the drug meant for domestic consumption, to registered hospitals and clinics in public and private sector directly.
"Oxytocin in any form or name will not be allowed to be sold through retail chemist," the statement said.All the registered hospitals and clinics in public and private sector in the country have been advised to contact KAPL at instmkt@kaplindia.com, and place their orders with the company as the drug will not be available with retail chemists or any other manufacturer, the statement said.(UNI)
