Chennai: For the first time in India, a mega expo to mark the National Bone and Joint Day on Ortho and Trauma Care, would be held here from Saturday.
This was the first of its kind initiative in the country organized to create awareness among the public to protect their bone and joints.
During the two-day event, to be organised by the International Ortho and Trauma Care, with the theme 'Stronger Bones, Stronger India', Orthopaedic experts would highlight the advancements made in the treatment of bone and joint related problems.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, Dr A Kamaraj, Founder of Dr Kamaraj Multi-Speciality Hospital and Director of Aakash Fertility Centre and Hospital and Ortho expert Dr P Radhakrishnan of International Ortho and Trauma Care, said Free BMD SCAN (Bone Mineral Density) will be done for the public during the event.
They said a bone mineral density test uses X-rays to measure the amount of minerals - namely calcium - to check whether the bones were weaker. This test was important for people who were at risk for osteoporosis, especially women and older adults.
The test, referred to as Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), was an important test for osteoporosis, which was the most common type of bone disease.
Osteoporosis causes the bone tissue to become thin and frail over time and leads to disabling fractures. (UNI)
