New Delhi: Life-style diseases like heart and chronic respiratory ailments kill more people than communicable diseases, including tuberculosis and diarrhoea in every state in the country.As per a report on ''India: Health of Nation's State - The India State Level Disease Burden Initiative'', recently published by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 61.8 per cent of all deaths occurred due to non communicable diseases (NCDs) in India, while communicable diseases, including Tuberculosis and Diarrhoea, account for 27.5 per cent.
The proportion of all deaths due to malnutrition is reduced to 35.5 pc in 1990 to 14.6 pc in 2016, but it still is the single largest risk factor responsible for total disease burden in India, as per the report.To support the state government 's efforts, the Centre is implementing National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke for interventions up to district level under the National Health Mission.For early diagnosis, population level initiative by prevention, control and screening of common NCDs, including diabetes, hypertension and cancer - oral, breast, cervical -- had been rolled out in over 100 districts of the country in 2017-18.Under the strengthening of tertiary care for cancer centre scheme, the Centre is assisting states to set up state cancer institutes and centres in different parts of the country.
The Centre, through its hospitals, augments the efforts of the states for providing health services in the country.Six new AIIMs have been set up and upgradation of identified medical colleges have been undertaken which will also improve tertiary care facilities.For nutritional intervention, several steps and initiatives, including Reproductive and Child Health, Mothers Absolute Affection, National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme and Janani Suraksha Yojana have been taken by the government.(UNI)
