In many Indian homes, people keep small stone Shivlings or idols in the garden or plant pots. Sometimes, these sacred symbols are even placed beside the Tulsi plant. This raises a common question: Is it appropriate to keep a Shivling or Ganesh idol near the Tulsi plant?
Shivling and Tulsi – why they should not be placed together
According to traditional belief, a Shivling should never be placed next to Tulsi. The reason lies in mythology:
Tulsi was originally Vrinda, the wife of the demon king Jalandhar. Lord Shiva killed Jalandhar in battle. Heartbroken, Vrinda cursed Shiva and later transformed into the Tulsi plant. Because of this episode, devotees avoid offering Tulsi leaves to Shiva or placing a Shivling near Tulsi.
Another belief says Tulsi is regarded as the consort of Lord Vishnu. Since Tulsi belongs to Vishnu, she is not offered to Shiva.
Why a Ganesh idol is also avoided near Tulsi
Another mythological story explains the association between Tulsi and Lord Ganesh. When Tulsi saw Lord Ganesh, she expressed a wish to marry him. Ganesh declined, upsetting Tulsi, who cursed him that he would be married twice.
Due to this story, it is believed that placing Ganesh idols near Tulsi is inauspicious.
What can be placed near the Tulsi plant?
Objects associated with Lord Vishnu are considered appropriate because Tulsi is accepted as his divine consort. Therefore, devotees commonly keep:
-
Shaligram (Vishnu’s stone form)
-
Idol of Goddess Lakshmi
-
Other Vishnu-related symbols or objects
