As Diwali approaches, every household begins the grand cleaning ritual. In Sanatan Dharma, pre-Diwali cleaning holds deep spiritual significance. It symbolizes the removal of poverty and negativity from the home and prepares every corner for the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed that when we open long-closed spaces during cleaning, the universe sends us certain signs through the objects we find.
If you happen to find any of these four auspicious items while cleaning, it’s believed that Goddess Lakshmi’s grace is upon you and prosperity is on its way:
1. Finding Unexpected Money: If you discover old coins or forgotten currency notes in a drawer, purse, or box during Diwali cleaning, consider it a very lucky sign. It indicates the resolution of financial issues and the recovery of pending money. Do not spend this money immediately — instead, clean it properly, keep a few coins in your home temple, and wrap the rest in a red cloth inside your locker. This is believed to attract more wealth.
2. Finding a Conch Shell or Cowrie Shell: Both conch shells (shankh) and cowrie shells (kaudi) are associated with the Samudra Manthan and are beloved by Goddess Lakshmi. The conch is sacred to Lord Vishnu, and where he is honored, Goddess Lakshmi resides. Cowrie shells were used as currency in ancient times and symbolize wealth. Finding them during cleaning signifies upcoming stability and prosperity. Purify them with Ganga water and place them on your home temple to worship on Diwali.
3. Finding a Peacock Feather: A peacock feather is considered highly auspicious in Hinduism. It is dear to Lord Krishna and is also connected with Goddess Saraswati, the deity of wisdom. Discovering one indicates that negative energies are leaving your home and positivity is increasing. It also signifies upcoming success in education, art, and creativity, while protecting the home from the evil eye. Keep it in a sacred space like the temple or study room — never on the floor.
4. Finding a Red Cloth: The color red symbolizes power, courage, fortune, and marital bliss. It is sacred to both Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Durga. Finding a clean red cloth, chunari, or temple fabric during cleaning is an extremely positive omen, suggesting divine blessings and the fulfillment of wishes. It also enhances harmony and good luck in married life. Keep it respectfully in your home temple or locker, or use it during auspicious rituals.
