Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most sacred festivals in Hinduism. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and marks the auspicious night when Goddess Lakshmi visits devotees’ homes, bringing prosperity, wealth, and happiness.

According to Vedic and astrological beliefs, diyas (lamps) should not be placed directly on the ground or floor. Placing certain sacred items beneath them is said to please Goddess Lakshmi and attract peace, abundance, and success into the home.

Why Diyas Should Be Given a Asana?

In Sanatan Dharma, a lit diya represents Agni Dev (the Fire God). Just as no deity is placed directly on the ground out of respect, diyas too should rest on an auspicious base such as akshat (rice), turmeric, or grain. Doing so honors the divine flame and multiplies the blessings it brings.

3 Auspicious Things to Place Under a Diya

1. Akshat (Unbroken Rice Grains)

Rice, or Akshat, symbolizes purity, prosperity, and completeness. Every Hindu ritual is considered incomplete without it. In astrology, rice is associated with Venus (Shukra), the planet that governs wealth, luxury, and harmony. Placing a small pinch of unbroken rice beneath diyas strengthens the influence of Venus, ensuring financial growth and family prosperity.

2. Turmeric (Haldi)

Turmeric is believed to be the abode of Goddess Lakshmi herself. It represents good fortune, and expansion. Especially whole turmeric roots are considered highly auspicious. Associated with Mars and Jupiter, turmeric enhances positive energy, courage, wisdom, and prosperity. Place a small amount of turmeric powder or a turmeric root over the rice before lighting the diya to invite abundance and ward off negativity.

3. Coin (Sikka)

A coin symbolizes the arrival and stability of wealth. Placing a coin under diyas on Diwali night acts as a charm to attract money and permanent blessings from Goddess Lakshmi. Since coins are made of metal, they represent strength, durability, and material stability. After Diwali Puja, keep this coin in your locker or wealth area—it is believed to ensure a continuous flow of wealth throughout the year.

By placing rice, turmeric, and a coin under diyas before lighting them, you not only respect the divine flame but also create a magnetic flow of positivity and prosperity in your home during Diwali.
