Diwali 2025: Why Lord Krishna Is the Real Hero in Goa and Know Whose Effigy Is Burnt on Narak Chaturdashi

Diwali is celebrated across India with diverse customs and traditions. In Goa, the festival has a unique identity tied to Narak Chaturdashi, also known as the day of Narakasur Vadh. On this day, Lord Krishna is considered the true hero, as he is believed to have defeated the demon Narakasur. Large effigies are burnt throughout Goa to symbolize the victory of good over evil.

Why Lord Krishna Is the Hero of Diwali in Goa

In most parts of India, Diwali is associated with Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya and his victory over Ravana. However, in Goa, the central figure is Lord Krishna. It is believed that he slayed the demon Narakasur, freeing the world from his tyranny. This event is commemorated every year on Narak Chaturdashi by burning effigies that represent the demon. 

The Mythological Story of Narakasur Vadh

Lord Krishna was living happily in Dwarka with his eight wives. One day, Indra, king of heaven, came to Krishna and said:

“O Krishna! The demon king Bhaumasur of Pragjyotishpur is terrorizing the gods. They are helpless and in distress.”

Krishna accepted Indra’s plea and, accompanied by his beloved wife Satyabhama, flew on Garuda to Pragjyotishpur. There, with Satyabhama’s help, he first killed the demon Mur and Mur’s six sons: Tamra, Antariksha, Shravan, Vibhavasu, Nabhashwan, and Arun. 

After hearing of Mur’s death, Bhaumasur gathered his army of demons and set out for battle. Since he had been cursed to be killed by a woman, Krishna made Satyabhama his charioteer. After a fierce battle, Krishna, with Satyabhama’s assistance, killed Bhaumasur.

According to the Bhagavata Purana, Bhaumasur was born to Mother Earth, who had previously been rescued by Vishnu’s Varaha avatar. Despite his divine parentage, Bhaumasur became cruel and oppressive, earning the name Narakasur. He had also defeated Indra and driven him out of his kingdom, causing terror among the gods. After killing him, Krishna gave his son Bhagadatt a safe kingdom and crowned him.

Krishna defeated Narakasur on Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month, which is why Narak Chaturdashi is observed a day before Diwali in his honor.

Effigy Burning in Goa on Narak Chaturdashi

On Narak Chaturdashi, locals in Goa make large effigies representing Narakasur from paper, wood, and cloth, often filled with fireworks. These effigies are placed at prominent locations in villages and cities. Early in the morning, the effigies are burnt, symbolizing the destruction of evil.

People gather to worship Lord Krishna and celebrate the triumph of good over evil. The festival is marked with great enthusiasm, with participation from children to elders, making it a vibrant and joyous occasion in Goa.
