After the abduction of Goddess Sita, Lord Hanuman met Lord Rama and introduce him to Sugriva, Jambavan, and the mighty vanara army. Later, when preparations were made to cross over to Lanka, Lord Rama instructed Hanuman to go there as his messenger. At that moment, Hanuman expressed his inability to make the journey. It was then that Jambavan reminded Hanuman of his immense powers. This raises an important question—why did Lord Hanuman forget his own strength in the first place?
The Reason Behind Hanuman Forgetting His Powers
Lord Hanuman was blessed with numerous boons, divine weapons, and extraordinary powers by various gods. Endowed with such immense strength from a young age, Hanuman became extremely playful and mischievous in his childhood. He would often enter the hermitages of sages, eat fruits and flowers, damage gardens, and disturb saints engaged in deep meditation.
Despite repeated advice and discipline from his parents, Kesari and Anjana, Hanuman’s playful pranks continued. Eventually, the sages of the Angira and Bhrigu lineages became angry and cursed Hanuman, declaring that he would forget his powers and strength. However, the curse came with a condition—whenever the time was right and someone reminded him of his abilities, he would instantly regain awareness of his powers.
Jambavan Reminds Hanuman of His True Might
When the mission to reach Lanka arose, Jambavan had a long and meaningful conversation with Hanuman. During this dialogue, Jambavan praised Hanuman’s virtues, strength, wisdom, and divine capabilities. As he listened, Hanuman gradually became aware of his true potential.
The moment Hanuman remembered his powers, he assumed his colossal (Viraat) form and leapt across the vast ocean toward Lanka to fulfill Lord Rama’s mission.
