Can we buy new things during Shradh Paksha?
, Friday, 9 September 2022 (16:38 IST)
The 16 days Shraddha Paksh, during which people worship their ancestors is co-related to two things, first, the feast of the Brahmins and second avoidance of shopping. The latter concept has two schools of thought. Many believe that shopping should be avoided during Shraddha Paksh, while only a few accept that shopping in Shraddha doesn’t bring bad luck. Obviously, the former are in the majority. Let us look the both sides in detail.

As per the mythology the God of death Yamaraj set free souls from Yamalok during this fortnight and the souls visit their family members located on earth. This is called Pitra Paksh. It is believed that Shraddha Paksha is related to death and hence considered an ominous period. After the demise of a family member one keeps every auspicious, regular and commercial program in abeyance, same should be followed during Shraddha Paksha.

While the others believe that 16 (days of Shraddha) is a lucky number. Secondly, how come the visit of the ancestors be considered as ominous? They are merely pious souls who left their body long ago. The arrival of ancestors should be a moment of joy for the family instead. When ancestors watch their successors purchasing new stuffs, they glee in satisfaction. It is a symbol of prosperity and how come this can offend the ancestors?

It is to be noted that Shraddha Paksha is a ritual observed for the peace and happiness of the ancestors. Shopping and performing other auspicious work bring good fortune to the house. Usually, ancestors mark their presence during Ganesha Aradhna and Devi Pooja. If something is purchased in the presence of departed souls, ancestors are only going to shower their best wishes.

To respect and oblige the sacrifices done by the ancestors is the real Shraddha. One should refrain from illegal, immoral and inhuman acts during these days, not from the auspicious events and shopping. These days are more auspicious than the normal ones as the home is filled with the ethereal presence of our bygone beloved ancestors.
