Why Karwa Chauth?

Karwa Chauth never fails to inspire a heated debate in social media as it had been the trend in recent times. In an absolute polarization, two sections split apart regarding their views of this festival. Some call it rigid, dated, dogmatic and an epitome of patriarchy, while some other see it as just a harmless colorful tradition, which allows women to, not to mention fast for a day and put on their perfect look, but also to show their husbands a gesture of love and care.

We talked to few girls and women about this. Their answers revealed a pattern of thought which emerges in the public domain each time a Karwa Chauth appears. Let’s have a look at them.

Celebration of womanhood

Karva Chauth in its true sense is a celebration of womanhood. The sacrifice and devotion that a woman willingly bestow on her man is perhaps the greatest strength a human can exhibit. I fail to understand why so much outrage can be seen in public domain regarding this harmless festival.

Not my cup of tea

As Indians are festive people, we also celebrate Karwa Chauth with much zeal. Karwa Chauth has been presented quite glamorously on celluloid. In Bollywood movies, husband pampers his wife observing a fast, calls her 100 times and gives a precious gift. Girls too expect the same from their partner. However, sometimes they over expect. As far as I am concerned, I don’t personally believe in the idea of Karwa Chauth.

Why women only?

I don’t subscribe to the apparent reason associated with it. I am unable to remain hungry for a long time, so I don’t fast on any occasion. However, I think it should be a matter of choice for any women, but why this ritual is restricted to women only, it is beyond my understanding.

It enhances the bonding

Many rituals in our Indian society are not barely myths, but their worth is also scientifically proven. Karwa Chauth is not only a Nirjala fast, it enhances the love and bond between two soul. My husband is also doing fast for me which I really admire. I am very desperate for Karwa Chauth as my husband use to give a precious gift to me on this day.
