Jakarta: Around 300 crocodiles were butchered in a revenge attack after a local man was
mauled by one of the reptiles at a breeding farm in Papua province, authorities said on Monday.
The incident took place on Saturday after the man's funeral completed. The 48-year-old man was killed after he entered an enclosure while looking for grass to feed his livestock, said Basar Manullang, head of Indonesia's Natural Resources Conservation Agency.
The man's family and hundreds of other locals, angry over the farm's location near a residential area, walked first to a police station where they were assured with a compensation. But the mob was not satisfied and headed to the crocodile farm armed with clubs, knives, machetes and shovels. They later slaughtered some 292 crocodiles, ranging from palm-sized babies to two-metre adults, the authorities added.
The Southeast Asian archipelago is home to a vast array of wildlife, including several species of crocodile that regularly attack and kill humans. In March authorities in Borneo shot and killed a six-metre long crocodile after it ate a local palm plantation worker.
