Tensions are soaring across Bangladesh as several cities witnessed violent clashes ahead of the Supreme Court verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The interim government has issued shoot-at-sight orders against rioters as disturbances continue to spread.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is expected to deliver its ruling today in the case filed against Sheikh Hasina. In anticipation, her party—the Awami League—has announced a nationwide shutdown. However, the Yunus-led interim government has already imposed a ban on the Awami League. A high alert has been issued across the country, and security has been tightened.

Late last night, Awami League workers reportedly set fire to buses and government buildings in the capital Dhaka. Several other districts have also reported violent protests. Security forces have reinforced their presence to prevent further escalation.

Before the verdict, Sheikh Hasina released an audio message on social media Sunday night, urging her supporters to continue their protests despite the government ban. She assured them that there was nothing to fear, saying, “I will survive, and I will continue to fight for the people.”

Sheikh Hasina is currently facing trial in Dhaka on charges of crimes against humanity related to the government’s clampdown on student protests. She has dismissed all allegations as completely false.
