Yangon: The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has reached 1,644, with over 3,400 people injured and 139 missing, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday, citing data from the Myanmar government.

Earlier reports put the death toll at 1,002, with more than 2,300 people injured.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, with tremors felt in Bangladesh, India, Laos, China and Thailand.

The quake damaged underground oil pipelines, local authorities said earlier in the day, adding that power lines had also been cut and oil tankers were arriving on the country's shores to ease fuel shortages.

A number of countries, including Russia and Belarus, have been assisting Myanmar with relief efforts, including by sending rescue teams.
