Pope Francis passes away at 88, a day after Easter

Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88 after a prolonged illness.

He was earlier hospitalised for various ailments, but last week, doctors discharged him after treating him for several weeks.
 
He was the first Latin American pontiff and was considered a voice for the poor. His death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo.
 
Pope wished people on Easter and held a brief meeting with US Vice President J D Vance yesterday.
 
A day earlier, Pope made a brief appearance at St. Peter's Square to mark Easter Sunday, although the Mass was delivered by a high-ranking cardinal. He also held a brief meeting with US Vice President J D Vance yesterday.

He was hospitalized on February 14 after breathing problems developed into a severe respiratory infection. He was recovering from double pneumonia, which left him fighting for his life in the hospital for a month.
