MOSCOW: Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, along with other members of the royal family, will be evacuated from London if the United Kingdom withdraws from the European Union without a deal thus triggering mass protests in the country, local media reported on Sunday, citing an unnamed source from the UK government.
According to The Times newspaper, plans on royal family’s evacuation exist since the period of the Cold War and were initially supposed to be implemented in case of a nuclear attack by the Soviet Union.
Over the recent weeks, the plans have been “repurposed” amid raising risks of a no-deal Brexit.
The queen and other senior royals will be relocated to a secret place outside London in the event of rallies prompted by a no-deal Brexit.
The United Kingdom is set to leave the European Union on March 29. While the two sides have agreed on a withdrawal deal, it has not yet been approved by UK lawmakers, which prompts fears of a no-deal Brexit both in Brussels and in London.
