US President Donald Trump has claimed that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told him that 35 million people could have died if he had not intervened to halt tensions between India and Pakistan.
Speaking during his more than 100-minute State of the Union address on Tuesday, Trump reiterated his assertion that he played a key role in preventing what he described as a potential nuclear conflict between the two South Asian nations.
“In my first 10 months, I ended eight wars... including Pakistan and India, which would have been a nuclear war. Thirty-five million people, the Prime Minister of Pakistan told me, would have died if it were not for my involvement,” Trump said.
The US President has repeatedly taken credit for easing tensions between India and Pakistan. Since May 10 last year—when he announced on social media that both countries had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire following what he called a “long night” of talks facilitated by Washington—Trump has made similar claims on numerous occasions.
In earlier statements, Trump had cited lower casualty estimates, mentioning figures of 25 million and later 10 million lives potentially at risk. However, India has consistently denied any third-party mediation in its dealings with Pakistan.
