Many devotees recite Hanuman Chalisa daily with great devotion, but unknowingly, some mistakes in the process may hinder the spiritual benefits. To truly experience the blessings and grace of Hanumanji, it's important to be aware of these common errors and avoid them:
1. Skipping the Opening Doha
Many people begin directly with the chaupais and skip the opening doha, which is an essential part of Hanuman Chalisa. This couplet sets the tone for purification of the mind before recitation:
“Shri Guru Charan Saroj Raj, Nij Manu Mukuru Sudhari
Baranaun Raghuvar Bimal Jasu, Jo Dayaku Phal Chari.”
2. Ignoring Purity and Cleanliness
Reciting without maintaining celibacy (brahmacharya), or wearing unclean clothes, or doing it without bathing is considered disrespectful. Also, avoid reciting while sitting on a bed or near unclean areas like the toilet. Always ensure personal and surrounding purity.
3. Incorrect Pronunciation
Mispronouncing words is a common issue. Incorrect recitation can affect the vibrational power of the Chalisa. Take time to learn correct pronunciation—listen to accurate audio or video recitations and practice.
4. Not Replacing Tulsidas’ Name
In the final chaupai, many people continue saying “Tulsidas sada Hari chera…”. Ideally, you should insert your own name in place of Tulsidas to make it a personal prayer. For example:
“[Your Name] sada Hari chera…”
5. Lack of Focus
Many chant the Chalisa while their mind is elsewhere. But Hanumanji frees one from troubles only when one recites with mind, speech, and action all aligned:
“Man Kram Bachan Dhyan Jo Laave,
Sankat Te Hanuman Chudaave.”
6. Reciting in a Hurry
Rushing through the Chalisa to just complete it is a sign of formality, not devotion. Recite calmly, with faith, and a peaceful heart to feel the divine connection.
7. Absence of Bhakti (Devotion)
Some recite only when in distress or just to follow a ritual. Reciting without bhav (devotional emotion) doesn't yield full benefit. Remember Hanumanji with love even during good times. Devotion should be consistent and heartfelt.
8. Not Following a Fixed Time
Irregular timing of recitation weakens discipline. It's best to fix a time—early morning or sunset—and maintain daily consistency to develop a spiritual rhythm.
9. Using Mobile or Talking While Reciting
Checking your phone or chatting during recitation breaks the sanctity of the moment. Switch off devices, find a quiet space, and stay fully present in devotion.
10. Consumption of Meat or Alcohol
Avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol on the day of recitation and the day before. If you consume these in the night, do not recite the next morning. Ideally, choose Tuesday for recitation and maintain purity from Monday to Wednesday.
Recite with shraddha (faith) and bhakti (devotion), and Hanumanji will surely remove all your sorrows and obstacles.
