Who Is Nandi Maharaj?

Nandi, also known as Nandikeshwar, is not just Shiva’s vahana (vehicle) but also his closest companion and gatekeeper. According to Hindu scriptures, Nandi was born to Sage Shilad as a divine blessing from Lord Shiva and was later blessed with the honor of guarding Mount Kailash, the heavenly abode of Mahadev. Due to his deep devotion, Nandi was given the special role of messenger, one who can carry devotees’ prayers directly to Mahadev.

Which Ear of Nandi to Whisper Into?

As per scriptural beliefs and temple rituals, you should:

• Whisper your wish into Nandi’s right ear.
• While doing so, gently close his left ear with your hand.
• Start by chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” before expressing your wish.

This ritual is believed to be most effective during Sawan, especially on Mondays, Pradosh Vrat days and Shivratri.
