Shri Lingashtakam Stotram

Many saints and scholars over the centuries have composed devotional hymns (stotras) dedicated to Lord Shiva. Among the most revered is the Shri Lingashtakam Stotra, a powerful Sanskrit composition attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. This stotra comprises eight profound verses, each glorifying the divine form of Shiva Linga, the symbolic representation of Lord Shiva. According to scriptures and spiritual traditions, the regular chanting of the Shri Lingashtakam Stotra fulfills wishes and grants desired boons to the devotee. It brings peace, prosperity, and happiness into the home. The devotee is ultimately blessed with a place in Shivaloka, the divine abode of Lord Shiva.

Brahmamurarisurarchitalingam Nirmalabhasitashobhitalingam |
Janmajaduhkhavinashakalingam Tat Pranamami Sadashivalingam || 1 ||

Meaning: I bow to that eternal Shiva Linga,
Worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu (Murari), and the gods,
Radiant and pure, shining brightly,
Destroyer of the sorrows born of birth and rebirth.

Devamunipravararchitalingam Kamadaham Karunakara Lingam |
Ravanadarpavinashanalingam Tat Pranamami Sadashiva Lingam || 2 ||

Meaning: I bow to that eternal Shiva Linga,
Worshipped by the best among sages and gods,
The merciful one who burns away desires,
And destroyed the pride of Ravana.

Sarvasugandhisulepitalingam Buddhivivardhanakaranalingam |
Siddhasurasuravanditalingam Tat Pranamami Sadashiva Lingam || 3 ||

Meaning: I bow to that eternal Shiva Linga,
Anointed with divine and fragrant perfumes,
The cause of spiritual wisdom and intellect,
Worshipped by celestial beings, sages, and demons alike.

Kanakamahamanibhushitalingam Phanipativeshtita Shobhita Lingam |
Dakshasuyajnavinashana Lingam Tat Pranamami Sadashiva Lingam || 4 ||

Meaning: I bow to that eternal Shiva Linga,
Adorned with gold and precious jewels,
Encircled by the serpent king (Vasuki), glowing with beauty,
And the destroyer of Daksha’s great sacrifice.

Kunkumachandanalepitalingam Pankajaharasushobhitalingam |
Sanchitapapavinashanalingam Tat Pranamami Sadashiva Lingam || 5 ||

Meaning: I bow to that eternal Shiva Linga,
Smeared with sandalwood and vermilion paste,
Decorated with garlands of lotus flowers,
The one who destroys accumulated sins of many births.

Devaganarchita Sevitalingam Bhavairbhaktibhireva Cha Lingam |
Dinakarakotiprabhakaralingam Tat Pranamami Sadashiva Lingam || 6 ||

Meaning: I bow to that eternal Shiva Linga,
Served and worshipped by divine beings,
Revered with devotion, thoughts, and actions,
Radiant with the brilliance of millions of suns.

Ashtadalopariveshtitalingam Sarvasamudbhavakaranalingam |
Ashtadaridravinashanalingam Tat Pranamami Sadashiva Lingam || 7 ||

Meaning: I bow to that eternal Shiva Linga,
Encircled by an eight-petaled lotus,
The source of all creation in the universe,
The destroyer of the eight kinds of poverty.

Suragurusuravarapujita LingamSuravanapushpa Sadarchita Lingam |
Paratparam Paramatmaka Lingam Tat Pranamami Sadashiva Lingam || 8 ||

Meaning: I bow to that eternal Shiva Linga,

Worshipped by the guru of gods (Brihaspati) and the best among deities,

Always honored with divine forest flowers,

The Supreme, the Absolute Self beyond all.

Lingashtakamidam Punyam YahPathet Shivasannidhau |
ShivalokamavapnotiShivena Saha Modate || 9 ||

Meaning: Whoever recites this sacred Lingashtakam in the presence of Lord Shiva,

Will attain the Shiva Loka and

Rejoice there eternally in the company of the Lord.
