Dehradun: A car carrying pilgrims who were returning from Kedarnath in Uttarakhand fell into a river, officials informed on Wednesday.

The car and the four occupants in the car were washed away by the strong water currents. All of them are residents of Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh (UP). Their search was going on by the time the story was filed.

State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) spokesperson Lalita Das Negi said on Wednesday they received information about a vehicle falling into the river near Kaudiyala from Beasi, a police post on Kedarnath Marg. On this the rescue team from Vyasi Post reached the spot. The rescue team found the number plate of the vehicle lying near the river bank which had the number marked UP-15AD-2158 on it.

The rescuers also found a carry bag, mobile and Aadhar card. This led to the conclusion among the rescuers that the car had fallen into the river. He said that the deep diving team from Post Dhalwala was also called to the spot as the water level of the river was high and the flow was very fast. The two teams carried out the search operation.

Ms Negi said that the name of Pankaj Sharma is inscribed on the Aadhar card found on the banks of the river. When their relatives were contacted, they told them that on July 10, Pankaj Sharma son Om Prakash Sharma, resident of Shastri Nagar, Meerut, age 52 years, Gulveer Jain son Darshan Lal Jain, resident Shastri Nagar, Meerut, age 40 years, Nitin son of Rajesh, resident of Shastri Nagar, Meerut, age 25 years and Harsh Gurjar son of Sanjay, resident of Kazipur, Meerut, age 19 years had gone for Kedarnath Darshan in the said Alto car, and were on the way back on Wednesday when the accident happened.

The families of all the occupants of the car have been informed. A search operation is being carried out by both the SDRF teams, local police and water police at the accident site. (UNI)
