Kolkata/Kalyani: An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale struck in the Bay of Bengal in the early hours of Tuesday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The early risers of this city and its neighbourhood felt the tremor, which was mild and brief. and there had been no report of any damage to property and lives, official sources said.
The NSC said the tremor happened at 0610 hours at a depth of 91 kilometres deep in the Bay of Bengal.
Septuagenarian Krishna Banerjee, a resident of Kalyani in Nadia district, said she felt a mild tremor while sitting on a chair in her home." I felt that somebody shook her chair but immediately realised it was an earthquake," Banerjjee told UNI on phone.
She, however, said whilst asking her husband Ashish Banerjee if felt any such tremor but the reply was negative.
She also said her friends at New Town in the eastern part of Kolkata also informed her about the tremor.
"EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal," the NCS said on X.
The impact of the quake was also felt in the Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Balasore, and Paradip areas of the Odisha. (Inputs from UNI)
