Agartala: Congress has been depleting in the northeast which once was a bastion of the grand old party. From Assam to Manipur the party has been thrown out of power by the seven sisters.The latest jolt is been reported from Tripura where the party chief has tendered resignation.
Tripura Pradesh Congress President Piyush Biswas resigned from the post as well as the party on Saturday, in another setback to Congress in a week after the resignation of All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev.
With Trinamool Congress coming to power for the third time in a row in West Bengal, five key Congress leaders, including Biswas, have deserted the party in Assam, Manipur and Tripura.
He is reportedly in touch with Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and may join the party next week.
Biswas, an advocate, had been trying to revive the party, but Congress sources said the leadership of the Gandhi family leadership became an issue.
Talking to media, Biswas claimed he would be out of politics for the time being, but remained non-committal when asked about joining Trinamool Congress. “I have sent my resignation letter to the Party President (Sonia Gandhi today...”
Congress sources said Biswas was upset as the party high command did not allow him to reconstitute district and block-level committees. “After 2016, the district and block-level committees were either defunct or inactive. Several state committee leaders were also not active,” a senior party leader said.
Biswas was given the responsibility of the party in Tripura following the resignation of royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarman, a close friend of the Gandhi family, in 2019.(UNI)
