In a strong political statement, Karnataka opposition leader R Ashoka today accused the state government of orchestrating a conspiracy to merge the Dharmasthala temple under the Muzarai department.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the 19th Crest Gate construction in the TBD area of Hospet, Ashoka described the move as a “religious conversion plot” comparable to Love Jihad, alleging that the government was motivated by revenue considerations rather than public welfare.

“The government is struggling with revenue shortages, while Dharmasthala generates substantial income, similar to Tirupati. This is why there is an attempt to take administrative control of the temple under the Muzarai department,” Ashoka told reporters.

“There is a well-planned conspiracy targeting Hindu temples, whereas churches and mosques are left untouched. A larger gang, including Maskman and Sujatha Bhat, is reportedly involved, with government backing for some individuals.”

Ashoka further claimed that progressive leaders under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah are linked to the conspiracy. “Once the "Mask Man" controversy came to light, the progressives vanished from the scene. The government has actively protected the masked individuals implicated in this conspiracy,” he asserted.

He also criticised the government for forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and spending taxpayers’ money. “Even during our tenure, similar complaints surfaced, yet we never formed an SIT. The people of Nagamangala are well aware of Chinnayya’s background. Despite this, the government has chosen to shield him,” Ashoka added.

The allegations have heightened political tensions in Karnataka, drawing attention to the administration of religious institutions, the use of public funds for investigations, and broader concerns over political interference in temples.

The controversy comes amid ongoing debates about temple management, transparency in religious endowments, and the role of the state in overseeing major religious institutions.(UNI)
