Back to back earthquakes jolt Kashmir

Srinagar: Two back-to-back earthquakes of moderate intensity struck Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said.
 
There was no report of loss of life or damage to any property.
 
As per the National Center for Seismology, which monitors earthquake activity all across the country, the first earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter Scale hit J&K at around 6.45 am.
 
The earthquake was located at a latitude of 34.17 and a longitude 74.16. Its centre was located 5 kilometers beneath the ground in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
 
Some seven minutes later, another earthquake of magnitude 4.8 on the Richter scale hit the region, with its epicenter again in Baramulla. The epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Jammu and Kashmir is vulnerable to earthquakes, and the region was hit by one of the deadliest on the morning of October 8, 2005.
 
The earthquake struck the India-Pakistan border and resulted in more than 80,000 deaths in northern Pakistan and Jammu & Kashmir.
