New Delhi: Reacting to the remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that life of his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, ended as “corrupt number 1”, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday told Mr Modi that his ‘Karma’ awaited him and that projecting his inner beliefs about himself onto the late Prime Minister would not protect him.
In a post on social media, Rahul said, “Modi ji, the battle is over. Your Karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug. Rahul.”
The tweet by Rahul came a day after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, said that the life of his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, ended as “corrupt number 1”.PM Modi also referred to the Congress chief’s incessant attacks on him alleging corruption in the Rafale jet deal, saying Mr Gandhi’s only aim was to tarnish his image.
“Your father was termed ‘Mr Clean’ by his courtiers, but his life ended as ‘Bhrashtachari No 1’ (corrupt number 1),” PM Modi said at a rally in Uttar Pradesh.
In an apparent reference to the Bofors case that tarnished the image of the Congress Government of Rajiv Gandhi in the 1980s. It was alleged that Swedish defence manufacturer Bofors paid huge kickbacks to Rajiv Gandhi and others for the sale of its artillery gun to India.
The High Court, however, said there was no evidence that Rajiv Gandhi had accepted bribes.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991.
Slamming the PM for his remarks, AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala said, “Modi ji, Mr Rajiv Gandhi was a martyr who laid down his life for Mother India. Indulging in such detestable abuse against a martyr reflects your shameful character and hateful mindset. The country will give you a befitting reply for this insulting behaviour and unforgivable crime. Mr Modi has an age old habit of defaming the Congress. The Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court, in November 2018, had dismissed these conspiratorial charges against Mr Rajiv Gandhi.’ (UNI)
