Kolkata: The Malda district administration, in collaboration with UNESCO and the Administrative Staff College of India, will launch a  mobile phone app to monitor marriages of school girls. The State Education Department is also involved in the project. The West Bengal Government has selected Malda as the district for the pilot project, before a statewide launch.

The app will be used to register attendance of girl students in schools. An absence of any girl for five consecutive days will alert the administration as well as the schoolauthorities. According to officials concerned, the app will also serve many other purposes simultaneously.

Every school will be provided with the app, and a teacher of the school will register the attendance of the students through it every day. The absence of a girl will be noticed here, and then steps will be taken to address the situation. It may be mentioned, the government’s Kanyashree Scheme has been successful in bringing down the social evil of child marriage. This app will help in further bringing down incidents.(UNI)
