New Delhi : Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday said thanks to the Gujarat elections, the government had been forced to heed advice of the Opposition and experts on flaws in implementation of the GST.

In a series of tweets, Mr Chidambaram said Finance Ministers of Congress-ruled states will force changes in the GST Council meeting.
'Thanks to Gujarat elections, Govt forced to heed advice of Opposition and experts on flaws in implementation of GST.
"Congress FMs will force changes in GST Council meeting today. Agra, Surat, Tiruppur and other hub towns are watching,' Mr Chidambaram said.
Criticising the government for avoiding debate and voting in the Rajya Sabha on GST Bills, Mr Chidambaram said now they could not avoid a debate in public domain or in the GST Council.
"Expect a shower of changes in GST rates from GST Council meeting today. Panic-stricken government has no option but to concede demands for change,' he added.
A meeting of the GST council is scheduled on Friday in Guwahati. There are expectations that the Council, headed by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, could approve tax cuts on many common-use goods for the benefit of consumers and businesses. At the meeting, a decision could also be taken on lowering of tax rates food served in restaurants. The GST Council is also expected to offer more relief to small and medium enterprises in terms of compliance burden. (UNI)
