Clashes After Bengal Poll Results: Bulldozer Used on TMC Office in Kolkata

Advertiesment
Kolkata violence
Tensions flared in Kolkata on Tuesday night following the West Bengal Assembly election results, after a group of people allegedly used a bulldozer to demolish a All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in central part of the city. Several TMC leaders, including Mahua Moitra, shared videos of the incident and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the demolition.

The violence sparked panic among local traders, who hurriedly shut their shops and fled the area. Police personnel soon reached the spot and intensified patrolling in and around the New Market locality to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation.

Mahua Moitra Reacts

Reacting strongly, Mahua Moitra took to social media platform X and shared a video of the incident, taking a swipe at the ruling party’s narrative. “Kolkata’s historic New Market. Bengalis revelling in Parivartan,” she wrote sarcastically.

What Derek O’Brien Said

Senior TMC leader Derek O'Brien also alleged that the demolition took place under official watch. In a post, he wrote: "In central Kolkata, near New Market. With police permission. As part of victory celebrations a bulldozer was brought in to demolish meat shops. CAPF standing around. THE BJP FOR YOU. Let the world see these pictures."

Counter Claims

However, some locals claimed the structure was illegal. According to them, the property had originally been forcibly taken from a shopkeeper and later converted into a union office.

Election Commission Steps In

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has directed strict action against those involved in violence and vandalism across West Bengal. Orders have been issued to the state’s Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Kolkata Police Commissioner, and senior officials of the Central Armed Police Forces to ensure continuous patrolling. District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, and other officers have also been instructed to maintain law and order.
