Chennai: The Cyclonic Storm Fengal over the bay, despite crossing the coast, remained practically stationary and will weaken gradually, even as heavy rains up to 50 cms wrought havoc in Villuuppuram and Puducherry.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister M K Stalin visited the Master Control Centre in Chennai on Sunday and reviewed the relief works in Cyclone-hit districts and said he has requested the Centre to depute a Team to assess the damages caused by the rain fury.

He also said Villupuram received heavy rains and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was deputed to the district to monitor the relief works.

He also said he would visit the rain-hit districts to review the situation.

In an update on Sunday, Met office said the Cyclone Fengal over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry remained practically stationary during the past 6 hours and lay centered at 0830 hours today, over the same region near latitude.

It lay centered close to Puducherry, about 30 km north of Cuddalore, 40 km east of Villupuram and 120 km south-southwest of Chennai.

It is likely to move westwards very slowly and weaken gradually into a deep depression over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 6 hours.

The system is being continuously monitored.

Meanwhile, heavy rains wrought havoc in Villupuram and Puducherry as the systems made the land fall very late last night, though rains subsided in Chennai and suburbs where the life limped back to normalcy after yesterday's battering.

Several north coastal districts received heavy rains close to 20 cms.
