New Delhi: Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai, who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has been remanded in five-day police custody by the Tis Hazari Court.
The court's order came last night after the Delhi Police argued for custodial interrogation to further the investigation. The probe indicates that the attack was premeditated rather than impulsive.
During the Jan Sunwai at the Chief Minister's residence, he did not merely hit her with documents as initially thought but also slapped and pulled the Chief Minister's hair before security personnel intervened.
The investigation further revealed that the accused was in constant contact with an unidentified person over the phone.
The Delhi Police will now examine his call detail records since last year and have sent his mobile phone to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for a thorough forensic examination.
In addition to the forensic review, the police are also considering recreating the entire crime scene to piece together the sequence of events. It has been established that the accused was present at the CM's Shalimar Bagh residence at 11 am on Tuesday.
The case has been escalated to the highest levels, with the Delhi Police briefing the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) about the incident. An FIR has been registered against Khimjibhai under three separate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including the serious charge of attempt to murder.
The accused was jointly interrogated by the local police, the Special Cell, and Intelligence Bureau officials yesterday.
